Teenagers & stress

Teenagers health & lifestyle guide

We have all at some time or another felt the problems that stress and tension brings and teenagers are no exception they also have to cope with stress, sometimes the stress can build up to almost unmanageable proportions and then problems start to show. Most of us have learned to recognise the signs and symptoms of stress and as adults most of us manage to deal with these feelings, however they can be confusing to the teenager who already has enough changes happening to the body with the onset of puberty. So what are the signs and symptoms of stress and how do we deal with them?

The most common signs and symptoms

* A general sense of being run down or extreme tiredness all the time.

* Snapping and anger directed towards those who are making demands.

* Irritability and negative thoughts and feelings.

* A feeling that everything is just out of reach no matter how hard you try.

* Flying off the handle at the smallest of things.

* Persistent headaches and/or nausea or vomiting.

* Problems with the weight.

* Sleeplessness and depression.

* Feelings of not being able to breath.

* Tightness in the chest area.

* Feeling paranoid.

* Feeling helpless.

* Taking risks you wouldn't normally take.

These are all signs of stress that can appear at any time and last for a short while or sometimes for example during exams they stay with the person and these feelings can sometimes last longer, build up and then it could develop into full blown depression.

It is important to realise that they are only feelings and if you recognise them for what they are, accept them and know how to deal with them then while the underlying problem causing them might still exist, the symptoms can ease a little.

Ways of dealing with stress

People handle stress in different ways, what works for one person might not work for another; this can of course depend on why you are stressed in the first place. Points you should remember to help you deal with stress are:

* Recognise stress and try to find the reason behind it.

* Realise that what you are feeling is only temporary and try and let it go.

* Take deep breaths, breathing in through the nose and back out through the mouth.

* Count to 10 or 20 or 30.

* Have a scribble pad to hand and when you feel stress building up then doodle.

* If you cant avoid stressful situations then realise that you may feel stressed when in them and accept it

* Get up if you can and get some fresh air.

* If you feel panic building up inside you let it wash over you and move on.
