Teenagers today seem to have a lot more problems than they did 20 or 30 years ago or maybe those problems were still around back then but we didn't talk about them as much. Parents back then weren't as open as they are today. Today more and more parents have a different kind of relationship with teenagers and teenagers can talk more openly about the problems they face. However sometimes teenagers can have problems and feelings that they can't seem to talk about.

Self-value or self-esteem

Self esteem or how the teenager see themselves or how they think others seen them is a big issue of concern with most teenagers, they go through so many different changes during this period of time and they probably feel its one of the hardest times of their life. Some of the common causes for concern at this time are changes to the body, the appearance of spots and changes to the body shape. Acne can cause severe problems during this time and this is one area that affects most teenagers' self- esteem and confidence.

Parents can sometimes inadvertently make this situation worse by making light of teenage spots without realising how this can damage the child's self-confidence. What might seem like nothing to an adult because we know it doesn't last forever for we went through the same things when we were teenagers, can seem to last forever to a teenager and so the problem seems enormous.

Talk with your teenager and try to assure them that these problems don't last forever and talk about similar situations you yourself went through as a teenager. If acne is a major cause for concern then consider visiting your doctor as sometimes the acne will need treatment in order to get better.

Helping around the home

Perhaps the single most problem with teenagers and parents stems from untidiness, not only the teenagers own bedroom but also around the home, getting your child to help during earlier years is a good idea as if left until the teenage years then are likely to rebel more.

All teenagers if left alone won't volunteer to help around the home and many think that mum is there to cook clean and generally pick up after children. Encouraging children from an early age to do small chores around the home and clean up after themselves will benefit you greatly when they reach the teenage years.

Essential points to remember

* Point out similar problems you faced as a teenager and point out how those problems did get better in time.

* Don't be too quick to point out how terrible you think they are dressed, styles have changed and as much as we don't like many of those styles just think back to when you were a teenager and the things you wore. Did your parents like how you dressed? How did you react?

* Teenagers seem to like challenging parents, try not to rise to the bait too easily, you could make your teenager feel unsure and do more damage to self-esteem. Again think back to how your parents made you feel.

* Never make your teenager look bad in front of friends, this is the worst thing you could do, if you're not happy with something talk with them when your alone with them.

* Make sure you have time to listen to them and don't be too quick to shoot them down when they talk about feelings and worries, try to keep an open mind and put yourself in the shoes of the your child. If they know they can come to you to talk then problems are far less likely to build up to breaking point.
