Teenagers preparing for collegeTeenagers health & lifestyle guideIf you are a teenager in your last year at school then you will have to decide if you are going straight into work and are going to be looking for a job or if you want to carry on with further education and go to college to study for a higher degree. The number one question you should ask yourself is how will I benefit from going to college? Why go to college? It's a fact that with today's modern technology, more and more jobs rely on the brain more than the brawn and therefore more jobs will require further education. Gaining a higher degree however isn't the only reason for going to college, college can open up a completely new world for the teenager and help give them a better understanding of the world and the people within it. You will be able to develop communication and reasoning skills along with some independence, while at the end of the course you will walk away hopefully with a degree and of course, this then leads to more job possibilities open to you. If you are thinking of going to college, then you should talk it over with your parents and of course your careers teacher in school who can help you decide which college is the best for the particular field of work you are interested in. All colleges have an open day and you should attend colleges you are interested in to have a look at the facilities and meet the faculty. The college will also have a prospectus, which you can bring home to study before making a final choice of college. Some ways you can prepare yourself for college are * Look into as many colleges as you can and read prospectus. * Get involved is as many extra curricular activities as possible. * Do volunteer work in your neighbourhood. * Explore careers and job opportunities. * Learn computer and word processing skills. * Attend college campus events such as sporting events. * Talk with your schools careers officer about your goals and what you want to achieve. Things parents can do to help their child * Attend colleges with them for open evenings. * Let your child know they are responsible for their own decisions regarding which college they attend. * If your child is attending a college away from home and living on campus then buy phone cards so they call home on a regular basis. * Set up an emergency bank account but make sure your child knows it is for emergencies only. * Make sure you know your child's e-mail address to keep it touch by email and chat if your child will be living on campus away from home. |
