Teenagers & low self esteemTeenagers health & lifestyle guideMost teenagers will at some time struggle with low self-esteem issues, it doesn't matter how they look on the outside to those around them inside they can be self critical and unsure. Even the ones with the dashing good looks and well built bodies, the beautiful silky haired young lady with the slender figure can all suffer inside from self esteem problems so how do the ones with noticeable differences such as a bad case of acne feel? Appearance issues aren't the only problem that causes low self-esteem issue although to the teenager appearance is a big issue indeed. The teenager can suffer from issues such as not mixing with the in crowd and feeling left out or that there is something wrong with them because they aren't as popular as some of the kids. There are many problems that can cause low self-esteem and which the teenager considers to be a huge problem, which when left can become blown out of all proportion. What can be done to help? If the self-esteem issues are due to appearance then trying to correct any medical conditions such as acne is a great help, some teenagers go through a very rough time with acne and it may need treatment from your doctor with a course of antibiotics in order to clear up. If the problems are due to weight problems then changing the diet to include a wholesome nutritional one will help. Once any medical conditions have been assessed then you know better what you're dealing with, if the teenager is reluctant to take advice from a parent then maybe an older brother or sister can lend a hand. If there are any medical problems that you feel you cannot talk with your parents about then your doctor is always on hand and privacy rights bind them so anything you tell them will remain confidential. What can parents do help? Parents should stop and think about their own self-esteem, children especially younger ones will sense parents thoughts and feelings and if you have low self-esteem about yourself then this can inadvertently be sensed by your child and they can develop a problem. In addition, stop and think about how you talk to your teenager, do you make light or joke about their weight, height, spots e.t.c, although your child may not show it this can bother them. If you are continually putting down your child then this can lead to serious issues and in no way will they feel comfortable talking about the very issues that you have been making light of. |
