Anxiety attacks or panic attacks as they are sometimes called are a lot more common than people think; and it is a sudden rush of adrenaline through the body which causes them. When our body thinks we are in danger it brings about a response which is commonly known as the fight or flight response, adrenaline is sent coursing through the body to prepare us to stand our ground and fight or to flee.

Of course, as the only fear we are confronted with is our own thoughts and feelings we have nothing to fight but ourselves and no need to run. This adrenaline then makes us feel light headed, sick, our limbs may tremble and we feel weak, we can then take on a new fear of fear itself and having another panic attack.

Panic attacks are common in teenagers as teenagers worry about a lot of things during puberty and they can very often become overwhelmed by concerns. However, panic attack and stress can be dealt with easily and once the diagnosis of panic attacks has been made and the person begins to understand what is happening to them at this time the attacks very often ease.

The person suffering from an attack will very often not relate it to worry or stress but instead believe they have a serious medical condition and even that they might die.

The symptoms of panic attacks and stress are numerous and can be extreme enough to alter the person's lifestyle until they realise and understand that what is happening is only caused by anxiety. The common symptoms of panic and anxiety attacks are:

* An inability to take a deep breath.

* Feeling the chest is restricted or tight.

* Light headedness.

* Dizziness.

* Nausea or vomiting.

* Stomach pains.

* A tight band of pressure around the head.

* Pains in the head and limbs.

* Lethargy.

* Sleep problems.

* A tendency to choke or gag when eating food.

* A feeling of dread.

* A feeling of needing to run away without knowing why.

* Self consciousness.

* Paranoia.

* Hot or cold sweats.

People can suffer from one or more of the above symptoms when they are feeling anxious or when a panic attack occurs, the important thing to try and remember is to stay calm and let whatever feelings you get wash over you.

As much as you might think, no one around you will notice anything different about you, so let the feelings that panic brings wash over you and relax as much as you can. If you can do this then gradually, you will see these feelings for what they are, just feelings and the symptoms will ease.

Sometimes especially if you have been suffering from anxiety and panic a long time you will need the help of a doctor to get over the anxiety attacks and stress, your doctor might suggest you try medication for a while to help you particularly if you have problems sleeping or are going through particularly stressful periods such as exams.

The important thing to remember is that you are not alone in how you feel, thousands of people suffer from panic attacks and stress related illness every year but they are helped and do live a normal life.
