Teenage puberty problems

Teenagers health & lifestyle guide

Puberty is a particularly hard time for teenagers, many times, they feel sort of in-between, childhood is fast disappearing and adulthood is approaching rapidly. Some days they feel more like a child, and then others they will feel more grown-up.

This can be very confusing indeed, as often they will have thoughts and feelings as they used to then other times more adult feelings and of course, they have to contend with their bodies going through many changes. Estrogen and testosterone are now playing havoc with the body and with changes to not only the physical aspect of the teenager but also their feelings and thoughts too.

Common changes to the teenager

Some of the most common changes during this time will be

* Hair sprouting in places, boys in particular will notice this on their legs and they can become extremely embarrassed by it.

* Odour changes - due to hormones and chemical changes body odour can become a big problem which causes embarrassment.

* Periods, girls will start their monthly cycle and with this, they can get mood swings, headaches and of course stomach cramps. They can get particularly embarrassed around dad and older brothers during this time especially during the first few cycles they have so some discretion is advisable from male members of the family.

* Wet dreams will start to become an issue which causes great concern for teenage boys, however this is only a natural part of growing up but it can be distressing for boys and mothers should be discrete about it.

* Girls will start developing more and this can cause some embarrassment, girls will need more privacy when dressing at this stage, sometimes they will even dislike undressing in front of younger sisters which can be a problem if the sisters share a room. One way you can get around this is to provide a decorative screen in the bedroom.

* Identity issues will start to appear as the teenager starts this transformation from child to adult, sometimes they will still act childlike then others all grown up, this can be a most confusing time for them when a part of them wants to cling to childhood but the other wants to greet adulthood with open arms.

These are all common problems and feelings that teenagers go through during puberty, this time can be as hard on the parents, for their little boy or girl is no longer little and is in fact rapidly changing into an adult. Mothers more than fathers seem to struggle with this fact but its life and we all have to face that our children do grow up and have to find their place in the world. The important thing to remember is that they will always be your child and will always come to you for advice.
