Teenage depressionTeenagers health & lifestyle guideWe all get a little down in the dumps at some time or another, the blues are only natural and this can be caused by several factors including the dark cold winter weather, when we are feeling a little unwell or when we have problems in our life. Sometimes though those blues can get a little deeper and turn into depression, depression is different from feeling down in that the same feelings are there but they stay with us and begin to affect our day-to-day living. Years ago, depression was not something that was talked openly about and certainly teenagers were not thought of amongst those suffering from the illness. However, recent studies have shown that more and more teenagers are being classed as suffering from depression, but luckily, it can be effectively treated. Who suffers from teenage depression? It was once thought that girls more than boys were likely to suffer from depression during the teenage years, but the reality is that girls are more open about talking about problems due to depression than boys are and boys actually suffer from it just as much as girls. The teenage boy who is suffering from depression will show this as anger problems and anti-social behaviour whereas girls will openly admit to crying and feeling sad or afraid. Signs that the teenager is suffering from depression are numerous but the teenager will feel a deep sense of hopelessness and feel nothing but negativity about everything and anything. Factors that can cause teenage depression Most of the time teenage depression is caused by several factors building up over a period of time, or depression can rear its head at a particular stressful time in the teenager's life such as exams or the divorce of parents. Some common factors that can lead to depression are: * Bullying at school. * High expectations placed on teenagers by parents. * Communication problems between teenagers and parents. * Break-up or divorce of parents. * Physical or sexual abuse. * Studying for exams and expectations of exams. * The loss of a loved one. * Low self-esteem. The signs and symptoms of teenage depression There are numerous signs and symptoms of depression, of which those suffering can exhibit some or many of these symptoms. The more common signs and symptoms of depression are: * Feeling very tearful without knowing why. * Feeling anxious without knowing the reason why. * Feeling tired all the time, with no energy. * A feeling of hopelessness. * Becoming very sensitive. * Feeling a sense of doom for no apparent reason. * Feeling irritable or angry for no apparent reason. * Poor concentration. If you feel any of the above symptoms for longer than a period of 2 weeks then you should talk with your doctor about how you feel as teenage depression can be helped greatly in various ways. Your doctor will talk with you about your feelings and what you think might be behind them and then suggest the best course of treatment for you. Depression doesn't mean you are going crazy and there are thousands of people suffering needlessly when help is available, depression doesn't have the same stigma attached to it that it once used to and you are not going to be locked up in a padded cell because of it. Treatment is very successful and there is no reason to be afraid of admitting you have a problem, in fact admitting and understanding depression is the first step. Many people, once they have a better understanding of the feelings they feel and knowing the cause of them, find they feel a lot better just because of this. |
