Teenagers health & lifestyle guide

Not only do teenagers confuse parents but also almost all teenagers will go through stages of confusing themselves; these will vary from feelings of anxiety and bewilderment to depression and sadness. This can be a very upsetting period for them as one day they can be happy and smiling, feeling on top of the world and then the next they can feel down, sad and full of despair for what seems to be no apparent reason. Some of the main thoughts and feelings a teenager will have at times are:

* Moodiness.

* Anger.

* Depression.

* Anxiety.

* Feeling stressed.

* Alienating friends.

* Alienating parents.

* Feeling they are out of control.

* Wanting to try drugs, drinking or smoking.

* Self infliction.

These are just some of the common thoughts and feelings that teenagers go through, these thoughts and feelings can come in stages with maybe weeks in between or they may happen from day to day. But why do teenagers feel like this, what makes them feel this way and suddenly change from one day to the next?

The biggest reason is because of the changes to the body that are taking place, the body is generating hormones and reproductive organs are developing. During this stage of your life, you are transforming from a child to an adult and due to this, many changes are taking place within your body. Up until the age of around 12, you weren't capable of what is called logical reasoning, but now this is coming forward along with other major changes.

Confliction

During this time, you will also face a lot of confliction with different people telling you different things and suddenly you are faced with wanting to know who's right and what you should believe. Around this time sexual feelings will also come into play and this only adds to the confusion, maybe some of your friends are having sex and you feel unsure of what you should do, if anything. Maybe you will feel pressure from your friends and at times this pressure can build up to the point of boiling and this is when your feelings change and you get moody or anxious, sad or feel down.

Things you can do to help

Perhaps the most important thing is to talk, find someone, a parent, teacher, brother or sister who you can go to and sit down and talk about these feelings. If you can't talk to family or friends then there are several child help lines that you can phone for advice or just to let off steam and they are confidential.

Try keeping a journal; put down all your thoughts and feelings in writing, this is an excellent way of getting things out and off your chest. If you feel sad then cry nothing lets off steam better than a good cry and there is no shame in doing so, it doesn't matter what sex you are if you feel like crying then do so.
