Teenagers health & lifestyle guide

Binge drinking is becoming a widespread problem with teenagers, teenagers from as young as 14 are turning to drinking alcohol and often this is in large quantities in a short period of time. Binge drinking parties have rose drastically over the last year or so and teenagers are drinking everything and anything offered to them. The reason behind the increase of the binge drinking isn't quite known but here are some of the reasons thought to be behind why teenagers binge.

* To look good in front of friends.

* To rebel against elders.

* Turning to alcohol as a way to forget about problems.

* To ease fears or worries.

* A way of escaping daily problems.

* Just for the fun of it.

* Trying something new.

* Not wanting to be left out.

* Drinking makes you look cool.

Each year teenagers die through binge drinking and not only from the damage that alcohol does to the body when consumed in binges but also from the accidents that are caused due to inebriation. However one of the main reasons that binge drinking should be avoided is alcoholic poisoning, since large amounts of alcohol are usually consumed at binge drinking parties the risk of alcoholic poising is great.

What does alcoholic poisoning mean?

Alcohol is a depressant which works on the central nervous system and when consumed in large amounts it can be fatally toxic. When the blood alcohol level rises too rapidly then this usually makes the person feel sick and they begin vomiting.

If too much alcohol has been consumed then the heart rate, brain functions and gag reflexes can begin to shut down and the person can then choke on their own vomit, have a heart attack or go into a coma. With a young person drinking too much alcohol can begin to poison their system quickly and immediate medical attention is required.

What you as a parent can do

Parents should sit and talk with their teenagers about the dangers of binge drinking and make sure that they realise they dangers and that you aren't just telling them this to be a stick in the mud. Young people don't realise how much alcohol is in certain drinks and especially the dangers that the popular "alco-pops" can be, teenagers see these drinks as pop and don't realise they can get alcoholic poisoning from them when consumed in large quantities.
