Smoking teenagersTeenagers health & lifestyle guideAlmost every single adult that smokes if they are honest will admit that they started smoking when they were a teenager, how do we know this? Well statistics have shown that adults don't choose to smoke. Almost all adults who smoke will have started around the age of 13 to 18, some will try as young as 11 but after the age of 20 people very rarely choose to smoke. The reason behind this is that teenagers and children think differently to adults, adults have a better sense of reasoning. Why do teenagers start smoking? There are four common reasons why teenagers will start to smoke and most teenagers will admit to one of the following reasons: * Being accepted - if friends smoke then they will want to fit in and look "cool", maybe friends have teased them and they gave in but most times they do it all by themselves just to look good. * Image - this reason perhaps was bigger some years ago when smoking was advertised as being "sexy" or smoking looked "manly" , however today teenagers see the tough cops smoking in movies and if they buy into this image then they soon become hooked. * Rebellion against parents - teenagers whose parents don't smoke often take up the habit as a form of rebellion, their parents hate smoking so they do it all the more because they know they shouldn't. * Becoming an adult - some teenagers think that smoking makes them look older, they want to become an adult and as buying cigarettes under age is illegal they do it to protest they are becoming an adult and should be treat as one. There are many reasons why teenagers start to smoke including those listed above however it's easy to start smoking but oh so much harder to stop. Teenagers often make the wrong decisions we all did when growing up but most of the decisions we made could be undone and didn't harm our health in any way. However cool it looks and as much as you want to fit in you should ask yourself is it really worth it, is it worth the harm that I'm doing to my body? Ask any adult smoker and the majority of them would say they wish they had never started, here are the main reasons why, and why you should think twice about starting or give up if you already started. * Each minute you smoke reduces your life by around a minute with the average smoker smoking around 300,000 cigarettes in a lifetime and each cigarette takes around 3 minutes to smoke. * Smoking is easy to start but it is highly addictive and hard to quit. * Smoking will cost you thousands of pounds if you can't manage to quit. * Smoking makes your hair, breath and clothes smell of smoke as well as doing untold damage to your internal organs. Ways to stop If you have already started and want to stop smoking then talk with your parents about this and your family doctor, most doctors now run clinics to help you stop smoking and providing you attend regular groups they will supply you with patches, gums and nicotine supplements free of charge. Don't think you are the only one out of your friends that wants to give up; you may be surprised that more than one of them would be willing to try quitting with you; they just don't want to be the first to admit it. You want to be an adult so act like an adult and make the first move, you'll probably be surprised at how many of your friends will think it's a great idea and join you. |
