Self abuse in teenagersTeenagers health & lifestyle guideSelf abuse or self mutilation can vary widely, some people will cut themselves, and others burn or pull out hair but whatever the form of self abuse the reasons behind why people do it are always the same. Finding out your teenagers is a self abuser is a nightmare for any parent and most of us will struggle with why they are doing it. Self abuse can occur when the teenager is suffering from depression and almost everyone who self abuses will suffer from low self-esteem and feelings of worthlessness. Self abuse can stem from insecurity or it can also stem from a deep seated mental illness so therefore it is essential to get help for those self abusing. The most common reasons why teenagers harm themselves * To get noticed, self harming can often be a cry for help. * A way of getting feelings out in the open. * Severe anger at another but instead of lashing out at that person turning on themselves. * I hate myself. These are just some of the explanations teenagers have given for self abuse and although some seem to go through a stage of mild self abuse it can become a very serious problem. Many times those who abuse themselves do it then regret having done so and hate themselves even more for not being strong enough to resist hurting themselves and so a vicious circle repeats itself. It seems that some self abusers go into a trance like state when self abusing and don't feel pain or others hurt themselves specifically to inflict pain upon them selves thinking they deserve to be in pain. People with very low self-esteem often take on this form of self-abuse, inflicting pain on them selves because they hate themselves for one reason or another and believe they should feel pain. Helping teenagers who self abuse Self abusing is a symptom of a much larger problem and parents should remember this on finding their child is self abusing, only very occasionally are self abusers able to give up hurting themselves. Very often psychotherapy and medication will be needed and in extreme cases hospitalisation may be needed for a short time. Professional help should be sought for all cases of self abuse and at the very least family counselling will be offered, it is essential that you find the reason why your child is abusing themselves for only when the underlying problem is resolved is there any chance of treatment and recovery. Professional treatment is needed for self abuse and parents shouldn't be afraid or ashamed to take steps, you may be tempted to shout at your child, tell them the behaviour has to stop but you should realise that if it were that easy your child probably wouldn't do in the first place. |
